Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganapati comes home: ten days of modak, aarti and farewell
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi, usually in August or September. Families and communities install a clay image of Ganapati at midday, worship him for one and a half to ten days, and immerse him with the cry 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' on or before Anant Chaturdashi.

When Ganesh Chaturthi falls
Every lunar month has a Vinayaka Chaturthi on the fourth day of the bright fortnight, but the one in Bhadrapada is the great birthday festival. The month is called Bhadrapada in both the Amanta and Purnimanta calendars, because the bright fortnight belongs to the same month in both systems.
Ganesha is believed to have been born at midday, so panchangs choose the day on which Chaturthi tithi prevails during Madhyahna, the middle part of the day, and give a Madhyahna muhurat for installing and worshipping the image. Tradition also forbids looking at the moon on this Chaturthi; panchangs publish the hours to avoid. The festival ends on Anant Chaturdashi, ten days later, though many families immerse their Ganapati after one and a half, three, five or seven days.
The stories behind the festival
The Shiva Purana (Rudra Samhita, Kumara Khanda) tells the best-known birth story. Wanting a loyal attendant of her own, Parvati shaped a boy from the paste she had used while bathing, gave him life and set him to guard her door. When Shiva arrived and the boy refused him entry, a battle followed in which Shiva's ganas could not defeat the child, and Shiva himself cut off his head. To console the grieving Parvati, Shiva had the head of the first creature found facing north, an elephant, placed on the body, restored the boy to life, and made him Ganapati, leader of the ganas, to be worshipped before all other gods. Other Puranas tell it differently: the Brahmavaivarta Purana, for example, has the child's head lost through the gaze of Shani.
A second story explains why the moon is not seen tonight. Ganesha, returning from a feast heavy with modaks, stumbled, and the moon laughed at him. Ganesha cursed the moon, and though the curse was later softened, anyone who looks at the moon on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi is said to risk a false accusation (mithya dosha). Tradition connects this with the Syamantaka jewel: Krishna, it is said, saw the moon on this night and was wrongly accused of stealing the gem, and cleared his name on Narada's advice by worshipping Ganesha.
Historically, Ganesh Chaturthi was mainly a household festival until the 1890s, when public (sarvajanik) celebrations began in Pune. Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak championed them in his newspaper Kesari from 1893, turning the festival into a large community gathering at a time when colonial rules restricted political meetings.
Puja vidhi: from sthapana to visarjan
Customs vary between homes and mandals. A common household pattern:
- 1. Bring Ganapati home
- Bring a clay image home, its face covered, on Chaturthi or the evening before, and place it on a raised, decorated seat facing east or west.
- 2. Sthapana in Madhyahna
- At the midday muhurat, take a sankalp, purify the place, install a kalash and invoke Ganesha into the image (avahana and prana pratishtha).
- 3. Shodashopachara puja
- Offer the sixteen services: seat, water, bath with panchamrit, cloth, sacred thread, sandal paste, red flowers (especially hibiscus), durva grass, incense, lamp and naivedya.
- 4. Durva and modak
- Offer 21 blades of durva and 21 modaks, Ganesha's favourites.
- 5. Recitation and aarti
- Recite the Ganapati Atharvashirsha or Ganesh stotras, and sing the aarti, such as 'Sukhakarta Dukhaharta' in Maharashtra or 'Jai Ganesh Deva' in the north, morning and evening every day.
- 6. Uttarpuja
- On the day of departure, perform a final puja, offer curd-rice or a send-off meal, and ask forgiveness for any shortcomings in the worship.
- 7. Visarjan
- Carry Ganapati in procession and immerse him in water, chanting 'Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya' ('come back soon next year'). Many now immerse at home in a tub or in artificial ponds.
Fasting and observances
Ganesh Chaturthi is more a festival of feasting than fasting, but many devotees keep a fast on Chaturthi until the midday puja, or a phalahar fast for the whole day. The household keeps a sattvik diet without onion, garlic or meat for the days Ganapati stays, and the image is never left alone or in darkness. Tulsi leaves are traditionally not offered to Ganesha. Those who accidentally see the moon on Chaturthi night traditionally hear or read the Syamantaka story as a remedy.
Verses to Ganapati
The Ganapati Atharvashirsha, a late Upanishad recited daily during the festival, opens by declaring Ganesha to be the visible form of the supreme reality. Its Ganesha Gayatri is chanted at the start of worship.
hariḥ oṃ namas te gaṇapataye | tvam eva pratyakṣaṃ tattvam asi | tvam eva kevalaṃ kartā'si | tvam eva kevalaṃ dhartā'si | tvam eva kevalaṃ hartā'si |
Meaning: Om, salutations to you, Ganapati. You alone are the visible form of the truth. You alone are the creator, you alone the sustainer, you alone the destroyer. (Ganapati Atharvashirsha 1)
एकदन्ताय विद्महे वक्रतुण्डाय धीमहि । तन्नो दन्तिः प्रचोदयात् ॥
ekadantāya vidmahe vakratuṇḍāya dhīmahi | tan no dantiḥ pracodayāt ||
Meaning: We know the one-tusked one; we meditate on the one with the curved trunk. May that tusked one inspire us. (Ganesha Gayatri, Ganapati Atharvashirsha 8)
Across India
Maharashtra is the heart of Ganeshotsav. Mumbai's mandals, such as Lalbaugcha Raja, draw enormous crowds, and the Anant Chaturdashi processions to Girgaum Chowpatty and other shores go on through the night. Pune's 'manache' (honoured) Ganapatis lead the immersion procession. Many Maharashtrian and Konkani homes also welcome Gauri, Ganesha's mother, for three days. In Goa, Chavath is the biggest family festival, with clay Ganapati and a canopy of fruits and vegetables (matoli). Karnataka keeps Gowri Habba on the day before. In Tamil Nadu, Vinayaka Chaturthi is celebrated with kozhukattai; Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have large public idols, with Hyderabad's Khairatabad Ganesh among the tallest. The festival is also celebrated by diaspora communities around the world.
Foods and customs
The ukadiche modak, a steamed rice-flour dumpling filled with coconut and jaggery, is Ganesha's signature offering in Maharashtra; fried modaks, kozhukattai, karanji, laddoos, panchakhadya and puran poli also appear. Homes are decorated with eco-friendly makhars (canopies), and neighbours visit each other's Ganapati for darshan. Because plaster-of-Paris idols and chemical paints pollute rivers and seas, many families have returned to traditional shadu clay or natural-material idols, smaller sizes, and home or artificial-pond immersion.
What Ganesh Chaturthi means today
Ganesha is the god of beginnings, wisdom and the removal of obstacles, worshipped first in every Hindu ritual. His festival welcomes him into the home as a beloved guest and lets him go with tears, a yearly lesson in attachment and letting go. The clay image that returns to water reminds devotees that every form arises from the earth and returns to it. And the public Ganeshotsav, born in the 1890s, still shows how faith can bring a whole neighbourhood together across class and caste.
